Dog euthanised after teens set up dog fight
According to the provisions of Section Two of the Animal Protections Act 1962, the punishment for anyone found guilty of this can include a fine, imprisonment, confiscation and/or being banned from animal ownership.
The Benoni SPCA recently opened a case of animal cruelty against teenagers in the Mokgoba area after they allegedly tied a five-year-old Africanis to a fence and encouraged four other dogs to attack the animal.
Inspector Tebogo Maswanganye said a 15-year-old boy called the Benoni SPCA in tears after he discovered his dog was taken from his house by other boys of his age.
“It was reported that this dog was tied up to a fence and a pole so he was unable to defend himself, while four other dogs were encouraged to brutally attack it.
“The dog was taken by the SPCA for medical treatment; however, it was severely injured and due to internal bleeding couldn’t walk. It had to be humanely euthanised to end its pain and suffering.”
The four dogs involved in the attack, which included a Boerboel, Border collie, Africanis and Labrador, were surrendered to the SPCA by the teens’ parents after they were consulted about the incident.
Maswanganye highlighted cases involving minors are handed over to social workers and can be reopened when they are old enough to stand trial.
“One of the greatest challenges the SPCA inspectors face is dogfighting activities instigated or deliberately set up.
“It makes us wonder what kind of children we have in our society today and what goes through their minds to orchestrate such cruel and devastating activities.”
