SA Legions local branch over 100 years old

The South African Legion recently commemorated its centenary in Cape Town, noting that the Benoni branch is among the first branches to have been established.

According to committee member of the SA Legion Benoni branch Jessie Farmery, when this branch started it has been widely debated.

The SA Legions is the first South African organisation founded to care for servicemen and women who were comrades of the Great War (First World War) and the league of returning sailors and soldiers.

In light of the centenary, the Benoni branch reflected on its achievements.

Farmery said in 1921 war memorials were considered by many to be a waste of money; mere bricks and mortar.

“Benonians took a different view, as money was raised and land donated by the town council for the building of the Benoni War Memorial Cottages.

“These homes were built, as returning veterans found it hard to find work, homes and food.

“The Benoni branch raised funds and built four memorial homes at the cost of R7 242 in the ’50s and then built Griffith Court, which has 20 apartments.”

The branch is still actively assisting veterans through the distribution of food and clothes monthly.

They provide over 20 veterans with food parcels every month with funds raised by the organisation.

Veterans who need assistance are encouraged to visit Griffiths Court at 2A Railway Avenue on Mondays and Fridays from 09:00 to 12:00 to fill out a form that will enable them to be placed on a list.

All that is needed is a copy of their ID and the army military number.

Residents who would like to assist the organisation or find out more can contact them on 076 731 3627.
