Fake doctor sentenced to 30 months’ imprisonment

The 45-year-old was arrested on September 9 at an internet café after he was found to have issued fraudulent medical certificates.

Christopher Kutoka, who was accused of fraudulently issuing medical certificates under the name of a doctor at whose practice he had previously worked, was sentenced to 30 months’ imprisonment recently.

Kutoka pleaded guilty to the fraud charges on November 4 in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court and was also declared unfit to possess a firearm when his sentence was handed down.

The 45-year-old was arrested on September 9 at an internet café after he was found to have issued fraudulent medical certificates.

He was found in possession of 38 blank medical certificates, a stamp, negative Covid-19 declaration forms and various other fraudulent medical documents in the name of Dr Modisane.

The arrest came after the HPCSA Inspectorate Office in collaboration with the Ekurhuleni East Crime Intelligence and the EMPD Community Liaison Unit established that 19 employees at a grocery store in Northmead Square had submitted 41 fraudulent medical certificates under the doctor’s name.

Eight employees who used these fraudulent documents appeared in court on September 13 and were released on bail.

They will all reappear in court on November 18 for their trial to begin.
