C Sharp learners perform at Barnyard theatre

A concert is hosted annually to showcase the young talent.

C Sharp Music Academy in Farrarmere presented its 22nd-anniversary show, Back to the Future, at The Barnyard Theatre Emperors Palace recently.

All the learners participated in a solo and a few group items and were given an opportunity to visit a recording studio to record their songs as part of their voice training.

C Sharp Music Academy owner and teacher Lizette de Klerk said due to Covid-19 restrictions, they were not able to fit everybody into two shows, which were scheduled on the day, and as a last-minute solution, they turned their dress rehearsal into a “mock show” to accommodate a few extra guests.

“Trying to arrange a show with lockdown, Covid-19 restrictions and the uncertainty of when theatre would be able to open again made preparations for the show quite challenging. However, I felt that if we could make it work last year, we could do so again,” said de Klerk.

“These shows have become a highlight for us and it was definitely worth pressing through. I aim to give the learners the opportunity to showcase what they’ve learnt and to perform on a proper stage with all the ‘trimmings’ that the professionals have (such as dancers, costumes, professional lighting, sound and a DVD recording) without it being a competition environment.”

De Klerk said their choreographers, Maritza van Staden, Yolandi de Vasconcelos and Paul Steenkamp, created “magic” on the stage with the help of talented dancers (some of them travelling as far as Witbank).

“The theatre is definitely a fantastic venue and besides giving the children the opportunity to perform on a professional stage, it created a very relaxed atmosphere for the audience, from whom we were honoured to receive compliments and positive feedback,” she concluded.
