Gym explains its stance on memberships
The City Times spoke to Xina le Roux, the club manager, and Jenny van Huyssteen, the gym's swim school and HR manager, to find out what Fit-Xtreme members can do regarding this change.
In July, Fit-Xtreme, situated at the World Group Lifestyle Estate in O’Reilly Merry Street, vacated the premises without notice to employees, the landlord or members.
“Due to non-payments, I investigated rental arrears for the gym on July 13,” explained Johannes Haupt, the landlord of the World Group Lifestyle Estate.
“On July 14, Fit-Xtreme vacated the premises without notice. All systems were disabled and staff left without any notice.
“After the gym’s departure, the premises were leased to a new tenant, Health World Fitness,” said Haupt.
The City Times spoke to Xina le Roux, the club manager, and Jenny van Huyssteen, the gym’s swim school and HR manager, to find out what Fit-Xtreme members can do regarding this change.
“For two-and-a-half months after the gym closed indefinitely, Health World Gym accommodated Fit-Xtreme members and we are still trying our utmost to keep accommodating them,” explained Jenny.
“The owner of Health World discounted memberships for members who had annual contracts with the former gym and we are still doing this.”
The new gym explained that it still needed to charge an admin fee to move the contracts over.
“We have monthly expenses. We cannot give the memberships free as much as we would have liked to, which is why we are working on discounted rates, based on how long your contract was with the former gym,” explained Xina.
“Although it’s not Health World’s job to contact all the members of Fit-Xtreme, we did try to.”
Jenny added debit orders being deducted under Fit-Xtreme should be stopped. If a debit order now states Health World, members are allowed to gym at the same premises.
“If we don’t charge, the gym will close down. We are trying our best to accommodate everyone through this current mess. We have an open-door policy and encourage members to come to speak to us if they are unsure about anything,” said Jenny.
The owner of Fit-Xtreme, Ryno Botha, declined to comment.
