Hyacinth gets the better of Civic Lake
Community members are encouraged to assist the metro by monitoring where they see significant hyacinth growth and contacting the call centre on 0860 543 000.
Years of neglect and sewerage are the result of what was once viewed as a beautiful lake that is now nothing more than spring-blooming perennials. This is according to Ward 23 councillor André du Plessis, who commented on the current condition of Civic Lake, which is completely covered in water hyacinth.
In August, the Ekurhuleni metro had begun mechanically removing the hyacinth at the Middle and Kleinfontein lakes.
Du Plessis said at the time, the removal of the aquatic alien vegetation will be of top priority.
Water hyacinth is a type of invasive floating plant found in water bodies across the world.
These invasive species block the sunlight reaching and oxygen level in water systems, which result in damaging water quality and seriously affect various lifeforms in the ecosystem.
Spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni metro Zweli Dlamini said regular herbicide spraying will be introduced at Homestead, Middle, Civic and Kleinfontein lakes.
He added that the maintenance of water hyacinth does not require a once-off intervention.
