When it rains, the sewage spills

The metro is to respond to Rynfield sewage spills.

Residents of Curtis Street, Rynfield, know when the rains come, their gardens get drenched with overflowing sewage and they now want this smelly affair to end.

According to one such resident, who wished to remain anonymous, her garden has been flooded for an entire week.

“I have lodged numerous calls to the Ekurhuleni metro, yet the matter is to be resolved,” she said.

“They do not seem to understand that a blockage higher up in the line is causing the spills and this is exacerbated by the heavy rains.

“As a family, we have had to seek treatment for e-coli, the smell and sight of it is horrendous yet, we must pay rates and taxes just to live in filth.”

Lornette Joseph, ward councillor in the area, said that she is aware of the ongoing spills affecting at least five properties in Curtis Street and surrounds.

“I will meet with members of the department of waste management this week to establish where the line is blocked,” she said.

“Once this has been done, we hope to remove it thus ensuring that no further spills occur. We realise that this is of great concern to residents and are working on a long-term solution.”
