Ward committee elections now open

The Speaker of Council encourages communities to actively participate in this process.

The City of Ekurhuleni reminds all organised formations, interested groups and sectors that nominations for the election of the new ward committee members are now underway.

The nomination process for all wards in the city opened on March 1 and will run until March 11.

Nomination forms are available at the legislature office at the nearest customer care centre. Communities are urged to take part in this process to increase involvement, diversity of nominated candidates and ensure inclusivity.

Ward committee elections will take place from March 28 and run until April 30. A link to the nomination form has also been uploaded on all City of Ekurhuleni social media pages to increase accessibility.

The Speaker of Council, Raymond Dlamini, encourages communities to actively participate in this process.

“Ward committees are the cornerstone of deepening inclusive democracy within the local government sphere. We have a constitutional responsibility to safeguard the legitimacy of these structures through transparent policies and systems,” he said.

“Ward committees form an indispensable part of strengthening public participation through bridging the gap between ward members and council. They are best positioned to influence municipal developments in the area aligned to the needs of the residents.

“Established according to principles underpinning effective public engagement, ward committees have clear delegated functions, which allow them to nurture social cohesion by building rapport within communities,” explained City of Ekurhuleni Legislature spokesperson Sphelele Nxele.

The term of office of a ward committee is in line with the council’s term of office.
