Follow-up: Weather, faults, ageing infrastructure to blame for Farrarmere water woes
The pipe line infrastructure replacement programme will be next.
Continuous water pipe bursts in Farrarmere can be attributed to several factors, including ageing infrastructure, failures at the pump station in Northmead and changes in weather patterns, according to Zweli Dlamini, spokesperson for the metro.
The City Times reported last week (issue dated March 25) the area had suffered five major water pipe bursts in one week.
In comment received from the metro, teams from the Department of Water and Sanitation have been effective in responding to pipe bursts and have replaced pipes where no repairs could be made.
“In the interim, teams are investigating the possibility of introducing pressure controls to ease bursts,” said Dlamini.
“The long-term plan, once the bulk storage at the Northmead Water Tower is completed, is the replacement of the pipeline infrastructure.
“The construction of sewer and water main lines in Farrarmere have been included in the 2022, 2023 and 2024 financial years.
“Projects included in the 2022 to 2025 financial years are Nothmead pump station upgrade, cathodic protection for existing steel pipes and pressure management,” he said.
