Daveyton granny turns 105

The 105-year-old lived in Bushbuckridge before coming to Gauteng in the 1990s.

It’s not every day one gets to celebrate a more-than-century-old milestone birthday, but Catherina Mashile of Daveyton has lived to celebrate her 105th birthday.

In honour of the centenarian, the local Police Pastors Forum (PPF) threw her a party at the Mokoka Library Hall on March 30.

Mashile, who was surrounded by her friends and family, sat like a princess at her decorated table full of sweets, chips, cooldrinks and a birthday cake.

PPF founder Edwin Mariba said they decided to celebrate Mashile’s birthday after one of their members, Past Zwane, told them about it.

Daveyton resident Catherina Mashile celebrated her 105th birthday on March 30 at Mokoka Hall. She celebrated her day with friends and family.

“It is important to celebrate people who have reached this milestone. The Bible and culture says young people should respect older people and then God will increase their years on earth.

“With such events, young people should take in mind that older people must be respected and not abused because they have our blessings to also live a fulfilled life, like Mashile,” said Mariba.

During the birthday celebration, speakers took turns to share how the mother of nine contributed to their lives.

One of her friends, Thandi Shabalala, described Mashile as a down-to-earth woman who loves singing and dancing to Sepedi songs.

The 105-year-old lived in Bushbuckridge before coming to Gauteng in the 1990s. Out of her nine children, four are still alive. She has over 20 grandchildren.
Her husband died in 1992.
