BFS arrests seven during weekend operations

Information-sharing is vital in the fight against crime.

Community cooperation and information-sharing have led to the arrest of suspects wanted for crimes ranging from theft, fraud and robbery, during routine weekend operations conducted by members of the Benoni Flying Squad (BFS), from May 6 to 8.

On May 6, at 14:00, community monitored cameras flagged a blue Peugeot 206, driving in Northmead.

“The vehicle was allegedly wanted in connection with the theft of a television and fraud at a guesthouse in Impala Park, Boksburg,” said WO Grant Giblin, BFS spokesperson.

“Members traced the vehicle to a filling station just off Pretoria Road and once information about the case was verified, the two occupants were arrested and handed over to the Boksburg North Police Station.

“As with a previous case in Edenvale, successes like these highlight the importance of continued partnerships between the SAPS and community security initiatives.”

Further weekend successes include the arrest of a suspicious person travelling in a grey Range Rover on the N12 highway, on May 7.

“The driver of the vehicle was stopped at the Snake Road off-ramp and a thorough search led to the discovery of three containers containing crystal methamphetamine with an estimated street value of R180 000,” said Giblin.

On the same day, patrolling BFS members responded to a call from a local security company about a white Hyundai Tucson with two men that allegedly committed a robbery in Brakpan.

The suspects were cornered at Zeeman Street, Brenthurst and had a toy gun in their possession, as well as a handbag, clothing and cell phones which were allegedly taken during the incident.

“Officers are investigating a possible link between this incident and other reported matters,” he said.

Other arrests over the weekend include two suspects who were found to be in possession of drugs.

The arrests took place in Turvey Street, Benoni and Ivory Park Extension 2.

Nyaope, cocaine and crystal methamphetamine were confiscated.
