Lions host successful Environmental Expo

Every eco-friendly decision we make will impact of the future of our planet.

The Benoni Lakes Lions Club, in partnership with Desco, Boibin and Zero Waste Foundation, have successfully hosted its first Environmental Awareness Expo, on June 4, at Belvedere School.

The event formed part of the Lions’ five Pillars of Service and is a follow-on of its successful Environmental Awareness campaign that was held at Lakeside Mall during March.

“We are committed to making a difference and leaving the world in a better state than we found it, therefore protecting the environment and our planet is crucial,” said Beaulieu Maré, club president.

“Our aim is to formalise this into an annual event and would like to see it growing both in the number of ‘green’ service providers as well as community interest.”

The event which featured stalls offering green solutions and expert advice on how to become a sustainably ‘green’ household or business coincided with World Environment Day, which was commemorated on June 5.

Tiaan Kotzé, DA whip on the Environmental Resource and Waste Management oversight committee, congratulated the organisation on event and continued by saying that the party as well as the CoE welcome initiatives which drive environmental education.

“The focus on the city’s plans, challenges and initiatives regarding climate change, extreme weather events, pollution and the control thereof bears great relevance,” said Kotzé.

“The metro forms part the C40 Cities network, which is a network of nearly 100 world leading cities taking urgent action to confront the climate crisis and create a future where all citizens can thrive.”

Pierre Marneweck, Benoni Lakes Lion’s project leader, continued by saying that the event aims to bring community, organisations and business together to not only become eco-friendly but sustainable in its efforts.

“When we realise that by doing a little, we will make a great difference in saving the planet and beautifying our natural environmental sites,” said Marneweck.

“At the end we all want to ensure that the environment thrives long after we have left the planet.
