Five arrested and three firearms seized

The arrests follow hot on the heels of an armed robbery

A high-speed chase on the N12 led to the arrest of five men in Daveyton on June 23 as they were returning from an armed robbery.

According to Warrant Officer Grant Giblin of the Benoni Flying Squad (BFS), officers were patrolling the highway when they noticed a grey Nissan Qashqai, with its front number plate turned upside down.

“Officers attempted to pull the vehicle over but the driver did not heed, leading to a chase,” he said.

“With the help of members of the community, the vehicle was brought to a stop on the corners of Heald and Matthewson streets.”

Following a thorough search three unlicensed 9mm Norinco pistols, all with serial numbers filed off, as well as 17 live rounds of ammunition were found and the men were immediately arrested.

“An undisclosed amount of cash, seven cellphones, clothing and four knives were also confiscated,” he said.

Following further investigation, it was found that the vehicle, bearing false registration plates, was reported as hijacked in Crystal Park earlier this month, during which the victim was shot and wounded.

“At the time of the arrests, the suspects were returning from Kriel, where they had robbed a dry cleaning business,” said Giblin.

“Thanks to the work of alert members, the suspects will now face the full wrath of the law.”
