St Dunstan’s polar bears take the plunge in icy water
Olympics silver medalist, Terence Parkin also took part in the challenge
Despite the low temperatures on June 24, learners of St Dunstan’s Preparatory School braved the cold weather by diving into the school’s icy swimming pool for the Headmaster’s Polar Bear Swim Challenge.
The inaugural headmaster’s polo bear challenge saw about 80 learners, 20 parents, three staff members, including the headmaster, Craig McIlrath, and Olympics silver medalist Terence Parkin taking part.
St Dunstan’s Preparatory School Director of Sports, Chris Tucker, said the challenge was held to raise funds as well as to raise awareness for those who are less privileged.
“We wanted our learners to experience what it’s like to be cold because that is the only way they can experience how the underprivileged are experiencing the cold.
“Learners who participated donated R50 or a blanket towards the school’s blanket drive initiative, which started two weeks ago.
“Others that didn’t swim also contributed. All proceeds that were raised will go towards buying blankets for the less privileged this winter,” said Tucker.
Tucker said the school also received a boost from Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation which donated R5 000 and tons of blankets.
Foundation CEO, Chantel Wittstock said as a foundation they decided to come on board and assist in this great cause.
“We are hoping to partner with the school because all of their projects are in line with the aim of our foundation, which is to save lives,” said Wittstock.
All successful finishers received a certificate as well as a hot cup of coffee to reward them for their efforts.
