Book vendor dreams of owning his own store

“If you are blessed, you must bless others”

Avid readers and lovers of literature regularly flock to O’Reilly Merry Street to seek out bargain buys from book vendor David Rwambi.

For the past two years, David has secured Ekurhuleni Metro issued permits to sell his vast collection of books from his make-shift book stall, next to the side of the road.

But the self-proclaimed bibliophile dreams of buying a shipping container which will serve as his own book store, where he can display some of his 5 000 plus books without fear that it will become damaged due to weather or transportation.

Known as the Life Changes Focus book store, David hopes that his passion for the written word will motivate others to use his books, which are all sold at R10 each, to expand their knowledge and skill base.

“I have always loved reading, it is not a past-time but rather an opportunity to learn new things,” he said.

“I believe that the right book has the ability to change a person’s life, that is why every item I sell is cheap because knowledge should be easily available to everyone.”

Making use of containers attached to make-shift wagons, David carts his prized-stock from Pretoria Road daily, meticulously arranging his stock for his valued customers.

“My means of transport is cumbersome and I fear that the manner in which the books are packed will damage my stock,” he said.

“I have made enquiries about a container and am now working towards saving up for one to permanently house my shop.”

While tending to his customer’s requests, David takes the time to speak to everyone, offering pearls of wisdom and gentle motivation to those he feels are in need of guidance.

“The community have been a blessing to me, not only supporting my business but donating more stock,” he said.

“In turn I use my knowledge and offer mentorship to those brought to my stall by God.”

David encourages parents to instill a love for reading into their children.

“My greatest joy is reading to my kids. Not only are they entertained while learning but I am spending magical moments with them. Moments, that are often lost in the hustle and bustle of life.”
