It is vital to regularly reassess your security equipment
Regular security checks will ensure that your system is working optimally.
For many of us, once a security system is installed, we just assume it will continue to work optimally, but we do not consider any regular assessments.
Now is the perfect time to decide if your security system is still adequate or whether any adjustments are needed.
The easiest way is to ask basic questions because the answers will determine what changes are needed.
“When last did you test your alarm system?” asked Fidelity ADT’s Group Head of Marketing and Communications, Charnel Hattingh.
“You must ensure that the system is in good working order and that your security company will receive an alarm signal in case of an emergency.”
It is vital to ensure that your security company has all your updated contact information on file.
“This enables them to contact the correct person once a signal is received,” she said.
“Ensure that you provide them with alternative numbers should the primary contact be unable to answer the initial call.”
“If you have completed renovations on your home, check if the new rooms are adequately covered by the alarm system,” said Hattingh.
“Valuables such as bicycles and toys, or anything that could be used to break in, should be locked in the garage or a shed.”
CCTV systems are no longer that expensive, while burglar bars, security gates and an alarm system linked to a reaction service are vital components that every home and business owner should consider.
For businesses
“Wear and tear on security systems is a reality. Maintenance, upgrades and replacements are a necessity,” she explained.
“Waiting for the system to become faulty is not ideal. Unfortunately, many small business owners only realise that alarm systems are not working or inadequate once a break-in has occurred.”
With several options for perimeter security, such as access control, gates, electric fencing and beams, it is essential that perimeter security is in a good condition and checked regularly.
Some safety tips to consider:
• Conduct regular walkabouts of your property.
• Prune and trim large bushes that obscure outdoor passive or infrared sensors or which may cause false alarms.
“Fires are a real threat and should be taken seriously,” said Hattingh.
“Having a fire escape plan, extinguishers and smoke detectors at the property are essential.”
She further recommends enlisting a professional to assess your security solutions and associated risk. These experts will identify vulnerable areas and offer the best solutions for your property.
