Severe weather expected, remain cautious

Motorists are urged to reduce their speeds, increase following distances and switch on their headlights.

The South African Weather Services (SAWS) has issued a Level 2 warning across Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga.

According to William Ntladi, the Ekurhuleni district manager and media liaison for Emergency Services, available Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) members are on high alert for any eventualities concerning floods and other related life-threatening emergencies.

“Swift water rescue technicians are ready for intervention strategies as and when needed,” he said.

“Residents are cautioned to remain on high alert and to practice safe survival skills in case of the anticipated adverse weather conditions.”

Areas that could be severely affected include informal settlements, formal structures built on flood lines and low-lying areas and bridges.

“Road surfaces may be slippery with water pooling on the sides, while obscured vision to the motorists will make it difficult to see potholes,” said Ntladi.

In case of an emergency, call the metro’s Life-Threatening Emergency Call Centre on 011 458 0911, 10177 or 112 for the nearest rescue teams to be dispatched.
