WATCH: Neon walk dazzles for third year

Thousands of participants showed up in their neon gear to support the Benoni Ladies Forum’s charity walk.

Ready, set, glow! Thousands again dug out their 80s retro gear to be part of the third annual Benoni Ladies Forum (BLF) Neon Walk on September 9.

As the sun set on a glorious spring day, friends and families flocked to the Aubrey Ritz Park, The Drive, Westdene, to indulge in gourmet street food before gathering under the balloon arch to complete a 2.5km stroll around the Korsman Bird Sanctuary.

From the water’s edge, the flamboyant flamingos appeared rather drab compared to revellers, who transformed the street into a dazzling spectacle of tutus, elaborate wigs and glow sticks.

Making her way to the starting line minutes before 19:00, Amina Bhabha, the BLF chairperson, smiled brighter than her lime-green scarf.

“I cannot believe how many people are here tonight,” she said.

“Participation is growing each year and with every ticket sold, the community is extending a blessing to someone in need.”

The event is believed to have attracted at least 1 200 supporters.

Bhabha said funds raised from this event will assist the organisation to continue its work at the Tambo Memorial Hospital in Boksburg and the Mary Moodley Clinic.

“These funds will go a long way in funding our ongoing projects, but it further puts us in a position to help as the need arises,” she said.

With streets clearing following another successful event, the BLF team, along with members of Bad Boys Security, and the Benoni CPF, started clearing up the park, and collecting bags of rubbish.

“With an event like this, we strive to remain considerate not only to the Westdene community but also to the delicate biodiversity of the pan,” said Bhabha.

“It is of the utmost importance that we collect and remove all the litter to ensure that we are not posing any threat to the exquisite bird life that calls the pan home.”

Bhabha and her team thanked everyone who contributed to the evening’s success.
