Operation yields successful arrests

Routine operations will continue across the province in an effort to stamp out crime.

Members of the SAPS Rapid Response Services (RRS) dealt criminals another blow, arresting 124 suspects during concentrated operations throughout the province.

From October 6 to 12 the unit, comprising of Flying Squad, K9 units and Highway Patrol members participated in operations which included vehicle checkpoints.

According to information received from Warrant Officer Grant Giblin, spokesperson for the Benoni Flying Squad (BFS), 72 arrests were made on charges of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, possession of vehicle robbery implements, contempt of court, robbery, malicious damage to property, hijacking, intimidation, bribery, theft, possession of counterfeit goods, attempted murder, being in the country illegally as well as outstanding warrants of arrest.

“During the operation, 44 hijacked and stolen vehicles were recovered, accompanied by eight arrests on charges of being in possession of these vehicles,” he said.

“Further successes included the arrests of two suspects on charges of being in possession of unlicensed firearms as well as the recovery of three weapons.”

Turning their attention to the fight against the spread and use of drugs, 42 suspects were arrested and heroine, dagga, cocaine, Mandrax as well as meth were confiscated.

The suspects will be appearing in the local magistrate’s courts soon.
