WATCH: Super fan ‘Mama Joy’ visits Benoni

There was jubilation and excitement at Farrarmere Primary School on November 3 as learners and staff members rubbed shoulders with Mama Joy.

South Africa’s well-known diehard sports fan ‘Mama Joy’ Chauke received a warm welcome from learners and staff of Farrarmere Primary School during her visit to the school on November 3.

Learners exploded with excitement as they saw Mama Joy walking into the school wearing her flamboyant attire representing South Africa and the Springbok team.

She was recently seen flying South Africa’s flag high in France as she supported the Springboks in all their Rugby World Cup 2023 matches.

Besides backing the Boks, Mama Joy is also known for being a super fan of our national soccer teams.

According to Farrarmere Primary principal Fiona Stansfeld, the purpose of the day was to celebrate the Springboks’ victory and to honour supporters, like Mama Joy.

“When the Rugby World Cup began, learners were asked to wear green and gold with pride every Friday. When the Springboks proceeded to the semi-finals, we told learners to come dressed better than Mama Joy and put on their best supporter look. One of our parents forwarded our pictures to Mama Joy and she promised to visit our school when she’s back from France.”

Stansfeld said throughout the Rugby World Cup the school motivated learners and staff to be the greatest supporter they can be.

Excited to be in the presence of South Africa’s well-known sports fan, Mama Joy, are learners of Farrarmere Primary School with the school principal, Fiona Stansfeld (next to Mama Joy).

“You don’t always have to be in the front or part of the team to make a difference but you can be a team player. It is not always about being in the limelight but being in the middle,” said Stansfeld.

The school was a hive of activity as learners presented speeches, sang and danced in the school hall as part of the celebrations.

Overwhelmed with emotions, Mama Joy said she was honoured to be invited to the school.

“The faces and smiles of the children have warmed my heart. This is proof that I’ve done well in representing the country and the Springboks have made us proud. This is the first time that I’ve been honoured,” said Mama Joy.

Mama Joy embraces some of the learners of Farrarmere Primary School during her visit. She is seen with Owethu Khoza, Emily Oelofsen, Alexi and Anastasia Dandoulakis (holding a picture of the flag).

Grade Four learner, Alexi Dandoulakis said she was inspired when she saw Mama Joy on television representing the country in France.
