Meyer wins two gongs at African masters champs
He won two gold medals in the men 65 and over 5 000m and 10 000m events.
Veteran Boksburg race walker Carl Meyer won two gold medals during the African Masters Athletics championships at Pilditch Stadium in Pretoria from November 16 to 18.
Meyer was crowned a continental champion in the men 65 and over 5 000m race walk after cutting the tape in 29:14 to win the gold medal.
He also claimed another gold in the same category, albeit in the 10km road walk, crossing the line first in a time of 58:38, leaving behind compatriots Johann Coetzee and Oliver Mundell.
The 66-year old veteran is a seasoned race walker with lots of national junior and senior titles under his name, achieved at the pinnacle of his career, where he broke over 30 national records in the 1 500m, 3 000m, 5 000 and 10 000m.
He’s also a race walking coach and is the only South African with a World Athletics level four coaching certificate.
