Socolo is top player for Etwatwa Warriors

“She’s our star player and always fights for the team.”

Wing defence Tuliswa Socolo was described as the pillar of the Etwatwa Warriors by her netball coach, Sbongile Ngcobo, after being named the club’s player of the season at an awards ceremony on December 8.

Ngcobo said Socolo, who also plays as a goalkeeper, played a pivotal role for the club, earning a fierce reputation as a fighter on the court.

She hailed the lanky defender for her commitment and dedication, adding that she understands her job and executes her duties perfectly.

“Tuliswa arrives first for training and is the last one to leave. She’s always hungry to play and even organises friendly games for us,” said Ngcobo.

“She’s our star player and always fights for the team. She’s tall, giving her an advantage because she uses it to stop our opponents from scoring.”

The coach also had a special mention for her skipper, Bongeka Jiyane, named the club’s best captain, for her leadership and role in ensuring all players attended matches.

“She would come to my house to fetch the equipment before every training session. Whenever we all contributed some cash for match fees and were running short, she would contribute more or even on behalf of players who had no money.

“Bongeka displayed great leadership skills and has been a great mentor to the younger players. We are lucky to have her in the team,” she said.

Lebogang Mthimunye received the top goalscorer award, Nomvula Khosi was named the best up-and-coming player, while Refiloe Ndlove received a nod for the best attendance.

She said the girls had a good year, and despite a slow start compounded by logistical and age-regulation challenges in tournaments, they fared well in competitions around Ekurhuleni.

“Our U13s and U15s did well. We had challenges in the beginning. We played against older players, and there was no protection for my youngsters. But we thrived against the odds.

“We played in a tournament in Kempton Park and won a ball and were runners-up during a Human Rights Day tournament in the Vaal.”

Ngcobo started the club during Women’s Month in 2021 to foster a sporting culture among girls in Etwatwa.

“We wanted to encourage fitness, a positive mindset and a safe space for girls in our township. After every practice session, they are mandated to do their homework and go home.

“It wasn’t easy at first, but I was patient, and in the last two years, we have grown a lot as a club. I do everything on my own. We are always looking for donations in the form of kits and training equipment to motivate the girls,” Ngcobo said.
