Legacy sports tournament a success
The tournament will be hosted again next year.
The Harry Gwala Secondary School beat Phakamani Secondary School 2-1 to win the inaugural 21for21 Maya’s Legacy Tournament at Thopodi Primary School on December 2.
The tournament, hosted by Bacha Ba Dichaba Explorers (BBDE), is aimed at uplifting young people in Etwatwa and Daveyton.
“The tournament is committed to improving literacy, IQ levels, sports development and donations to the children or youth in its communities,” explained project manager Thabang Dichaba.
Dichaba said the BBDE was honoured to be chosen to coordinate the tournament.
“The 21for21 Maya’s Legacy is dedicated to helping local schools and other organisations by providing support and knowledge through spelling bees, reading clubs, chess clubs and sporting activities.
“We were privileged to coordinate a successful sports tournament where the 21for21 Maya’s Legacy donated a floating trophy,” Lichaba said.
The 21for21 Maya’s Legacy was founded in memory of Maisha Marley Biemba, who passed away from kidney failure in 2020 aged 21, by her mother, Janap Biemba.
Janap stated they sponsored the tournament to empower and help organisations such as the BBDE to grow.
“My late husband, who was a soccer player, gave the trophy to May. It’s significant to carry Maya’s legacy and that of my husband.
“With this tournament, we hope that the spectators can drop off sanitary pads which we distribute to underprivileged girls,” she said.
Dichaba said the tournament will be hosted again next year.
“Next year, we hope BBDE can run a league for schools. We are proud to be associated with 21for21 Maya’s Legacy.”
