Busy Christmas, quiet New Year for SPCA

Benoni SPCA manager said the fireworks this year were not as bad compared with other years.

Compared with previous years, fewer animals were received at the Benoni SPCA after this year’s New Year’s Eve fireworks.

Only three pets were taken in on New Year’s Eve and January 1, according to GM Jacques Cronje.

He said two dogs were brought in and another one was collected by inspector Thomas Mohlake after they received a call about a stray dog.

Cronje said the fireworks this year were not as bad as in previous years.

“We had no serious emergencies except for one incident of an injured dog, but there were calls about strays wandering onto people’s properties.”

Christmas Day was, however, a lot busier for the SPCA.

They attended to 57 animals due to various emergencies. “Several pets were surrendered by their owners to the SPCA because they didn’t want them anymore, while some were brought to the SPCA after they had been involved in fights. We also saw a sharp increase in distemper and parvo cases.

“Eighteen pets were treated for parvo and 11 for distemper,” said Cronje, adding that pet owners must ensure their dogs are up-to-date with their vaccines.

An all-in-one vaccine which fights rabies, distemper and other viruses is available at the SPCA for R300.
