Benoni IEB learners celebrate matric results

Learners for registered IEB institutions received their matric results, on January 18.

Hugs, cheers and fist bumps echoed as Independent Examination Board (IEB) learners flocked to their various learning institutions on January 18 to collect their 2023 matric results.

Last year, 15 180 learners from 248 registered campuses across the country completed their final examinations, attaining a 98.46% pass rate. This is up from 2022’s 98.42%.

Armed with cameras, the Benoni City Times team visited Ashton International Collage, Pinnacle College Rynfield as well as St Dunstan’s College to capture the excitement as the class of 2023 bid their schools a final farewell.

Principal Clint Gaffney stood at the doors of the campus entrance hall, greeting all 40 matriculants with a broad smile.

The school has once again attained a 100% pass rate.

“I am extremely proud of this group of individuals, not only have they maintained incredible standards they continuously astound us with their diligence and hard work,” he said.

“They have set an incredible benchmark for the class of 2024.”

Encouraging this year’s matrics as they start the final chapter of their school career, Gaffney reminded them that the sky is the limit.

“We expect great things from each and every learner, we are here every step of the way to guide and support them.”

Ashton International College
The school achieved a full marks and 91% of the learners obtained bachelor’s degrees.

Two learners obtained seven distinctions while two received six. Three received five and five got four distinctions.

The top achiever was Sydney Stuart, who achieved the outstanding achievement for being in the top 5% of learners in six or more subjects and achieving a rating of seven in life orientation in National Senior Certificate (NSC) examination.

She obtained distinctions in Afrikaans, English, geography, life orientation, life sciences, maths and physical science and 78% for further studies mathematics.

Stuart was also in the top one per cent nationally for geography (89%), life sciences (93%) and physical science (94%).

Michaela de Freitas obtained seven distinctions for accounting, Afrikaans, English, geography, life orientation, maths and physical science.

Principal Lynne Felix and her staff congratulated the learners.

“Congratulations class of 2023. We wish you every success in your future and thank you for being exemplary Ashtonians.”

St Dunstan’s College
The school’s matric class of 2023 achieved a 100% pass rate.

The group pulled out all the stops by producing a record number of distinctions from six upwards, exceeding previous years results.

Of the 100 learners who wrote the 2023 IEB examinations, 93% achieved bachelor’s degree exemptions.

Flying the school’s flag, two learners from the school shone the brightest with nine distinctions followed by three candidates who got eight and four learners attained seven distinctions.

Karli Janeke and Aidan Jacobs outstanding results placed them on the IEB’s outstanding achievement list because they were in the top 5% in six or more subjects.

Jacobs further achieved 100% in mathematics and 98% for Further Studies Mathematics (Extended).

The school’s rector, Warwick Taylor, attributed the success of the school to the excellent collaboration between the teachers, learners and parents.

“We would like to thank the teachers who gave themselves tirelessly in guiding our learners. Not only has the matric class of 2023 produced some of the best results to date but they have also demonstrated a unity and support each other, character fitting of a Dustonian,” said Taylor.
