Doran and Hickley make the podium at season opener
Kevin Hickley was second in the men’s U20 800m, while Jade Doran finished first in the girls’ U16 1 500m steeplechase.
Jade Doran and Kevin Hickley achieved podium positions in their disciplines during the first league meeting of the Central Gauteng Athletic (CGA) track and field season at Germiston Stadium on January 20.
Doran, from Benoni Northerns Athletic Club (BNAC), won the U16 girls’ 1 500m steeplechase after breasting the tape in 05:37 and finishing eighth in the 800m in her division.
It was a case of so near yet so far for Benoni High Athletic Club (BHAC)’s Hickley after narrowly missing out on the top position by 57 milliseconds. He crossed the line in 2:00.57 behind winner Teejay Thomas, who clocked 2:00.02 for the win.
Ofentse Modiselle of East Athletic Club (EAC) claimed bronze in the men’s U20 3 000m, clocking 09:31 for third place.
The BHAC’s Matthew Mackay was fifth in the boys’ U20 5 000m. Avuma Pheza from EAC finished sixth in the same event. His teammate Ndumiso Ntombela was seventh.
Ryan Ferreira, from BHAC, finished fifth in the men’s U20 400m, completing the one-lap dash in 52.70.
Moetlo Sefoka was third in the boys’ U18 high jump with 1.75m, while his BNAC teammate, Kearabetsoe Kau, also finished third in the U20 girls’ high jump with a leap of 1.40m.
The Boksburg Athletic Club (BAC)’s Inge Boshoff clocked the third longest of the day in the girls’ U18 long jump with 4.64m to round up the podium.
On the field, Owen Dalzell from the BHAC was fourth in the U18 boys’ javelin after throwing 50.70m, and teammate Charmaine de Beer claimed the top position in the women’s masters over 50 event.
With the likes of national 1 500m record holder Ryan Mphahlele and 100m sensation Kayla le Grange taking to the field, CGA’s track and field commission chairperson Maggie Dicks gave the event a thumbs up.
“I look forward to seeing more athletes compete this season for the province to have a strong team at the national championships in Pietermaritzburg in March,” she said.
The second meeting is on February 3 at Germiston Stadium.
