SPCA warns about impersonators confiscating animals
The SPCA has discovered that there are people masquerading as inspectors from the SPCA.
The Benoni SPCA warns the public not to fall prey to bogus people impersonating SPCA inspectors.
According to the manager Jacques Cronje, people are masquerading as inspectors and confiscating pets from unsuspecting owners in Northmead, Putfontein and Etwatwa.
“There were two incidents in the past three weeks. A man claimed his dog that was supposedly confiscated by me and inspector Thomas Mohlake.
“In Putfontein and Etwatwa, someone told people that he was working for the SPCA and was confiscating animals. This fraudulent activity is negatively affecting us because our name is being used to commit crime.
“At this stage, we have no idea who these people are. Our inspectors are Thomas, Delia Smit and myself. We always wear our SPCA uniforms and travel in a marked vehicle.
“When we confiscate animals, pet owners sign documents branded with the SPCA logo,” said Cronje.
The public may contact the SPCA on 011 894 2814 to verify the identity of an inspector or report instances they believe to be fraudulent.
