L’Oréal bridges STEM gender gap

Applications for L’Oréal South Africa’s For Women in Science programme are now open.

The Foundation L’Oréal, in partnership with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco), announced that applications for the sixth edition of the Women in Science Young Talent Search, South Africa, are open.

This initiative calls for outstanding female researchers aged under 40 from diverse scientific fields, including formal, life, environmental, physical, engineering and technological sciences to enter.

Since its inception, the programme has awarded grants to 32 talented researchers, providing over R3m in financial support to fuel ground-breaking research.

“This initiative continues to tackle the significant gender gap in the region, thereby fostering diversity and excellence throughout SA,” said Michelle Gololo, the manager of corporate affairs and engagement at L’Oréal SA.

“The programme supports innovation in vital industries and celebrates the extraordinary contributions of women in science, highlighting the company’s commitment to local female scientists and its ambition to the development of scientific excellence.”

L’Oréal invites women in science committed to advancing scientific research and innovation to apply.

“This year, successful candidates will receive grants providing substantial support for their doctoral and postdoctoral studies, with grants ranging from R80 000 to R160 000,” said Gololo.

“In a sector where only 30% of science researchers are women, these grants are critical for inclusive innovation.”

Applications are open until May 19.
