Locals perform well in league

They joined around 1 000 competitors in the CGA cross-country second league meeting in Randfontein.

Benonians continued their rich vein of form in the Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) cross-country season, with incredible outings in the second league meeting in Randfontein on May 4.

The event, hosted by Mohlakeng Athletics Club at Randfontein Golf Course, saw over 1 000 runners participate in various races in their bid to qualify for the provincial and national championships later this year.

Girls

Bronwyn Nel grabbed her second win of the season after clinching the U19 6km when she coasted to victory in 25:25, beating UJ’s Lebogang Nkanyani, who clocked 27:35 for the second spot.

Mianda de Wit from Kempies completed the top three in 28:11.

Nel’s Benoni High Athletic Club (BHAC) teammate, Kiana Pepler, came second in the U17 4km race, crossing the line in 17:27, 01:03 behind winner Cassidy Bosman of Kempies.

The Benoni Northerns Athletic Club (BNAC) juniors were again led by their superstar, Chelsea van Dyk, who continued her resurgence with another superb performance.

She won the U13 3km race in 12:16 in the day‘s first race, paving the way for her teammates to deliver.

Kayla Botha won the U11 3km in 12:40, while Liane Erasmus grabbed the bronze in the same race in 13:12, and Dominique Broughton clinched the gold in the U8 1km event.

Alexia Visser grabbed her first pole position following a silver in the first league meeting in Tsakane last month. The youngster clocked 09:05 to win the U9 2km race, while Claire Zillen completed the top three in 09:42.

Jade Doran grabbed her second successive podium spot after winning the U15 4km race. She was third in the same race in league one.

Boys

Siyanda Madlabane made it two out of two as he again dominated the U13 4km race. He clocked 14:49, beating second-placed Neo Nkeane of Simunye AC by 15 seconds.

Bokamoso Nonyane also won his second successive race after clocking 07:29 for first place in the U10 2km event. Kaden Price was third in the U9 in 08:35, while Ricardo de Ascencao was fifth in the same race.

Rhys Connor Sawyer came fifth in the U12 3km race.

The next league meeting is on May 18 at the Kwa-Thema Sports Complex.

“This year’s cross country season consists of eight leagues. We’ve added two more leagues from the 2023 season, hoping to give more competition opportunities to our athletes,” said CGA cross-country chairperson Val Brentano.

Brentano further encouraged athletes to register timeously for events to ensure all the logistics are planned accordingly.
