UPDATE: Water supply expected to be restored this evening

Roving water tankers have been dispatched to supply water to the affected areas in Benoni.

Residents of several suburbs in Benoni that are without water due to the planned infrastructure upgrade at Northmead water tower are informed that water will be restored today, May 24 from 18:00.

According to City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson Zweli Dlamini, their team are still connecting the pipes and are working around the clock to restore water supply soon to the affected areas.

He rubbished claims that a pipe burst this morning while workers were recharging the system.

“The infrastructure upgrade at the tower in Benoni has been completed as scheduled, along with the repairs at Pam Brink reservoir in Springs. Technicians are recharging the system, with pumps running to fill up the water systems in Benoni and Springs. All affected areas are gradually receiving water while the system is picking up,” said Dlamini.

About two hours ago, a post on the City of Ekurhuleni Facebook page states that work at the Northmead water tower has been completed.

“We are recharging the system and areas will start receiving water throughout the course of the morning. Thank you #Benoni for your patience and understanding while work was on the go.”

The upgrade entails the connection of pipes between the tower and the newly constructed Northmead Reservoir.

Roving water tankers have been dispatched to supply water to the affected areas which are Airfield, Brentwood Park, Goedeberg, Farramere Gardens, Oakfield, Northmead, North Villa, Rynfield and parts of Morehill.
