The 952 learners of Farrarmere Primary School took their places with a speed of light, cheering and chanting as they waited for singing sensation Jesse Clegg, the son of the legendary Johnny Clegg, to take to the stage for an exclusive performance on August 14.
Learners, staff and parents erupted in cheer as the muso made his way through a guard of honour held by Grade Seven class of 2024.
“Thank you for the warm welcome Farrarmere,” said Jesse as he looked out at the bustling crowd.
“I have performed at various venues, in front of a variety of audiences but this is the first time that I have the attention of an entire primary school. This is a huge honour.”
The day’s excitement was as a result of Keane Payne’s (12) determination to expose his peers to proudly South African talent.
“My dad often works alongside Jesse,” said the school’s inaugural music monitor and marimba band member.
“I took a chance and asked my dad whether he could persuade Jesse to visit our school. To my surprise he agreed and his performance was amazing.”
Taking time to answer questions from six learners, Jesse said that education is the key to success.
“Enjoy your youth, learn, explore and make friends,” he said.
“However ensure that your education takes priority. My parents encouraged me to follow my passion and to be creative.
“It doesn’t matter how you choose to express yourself just make sure to use a creative medium which reflects your personality and lets your passion soar.”
Catching her breath, the school’s principal, Fiona Stansfeld, thanked Jesse for taking the time to not only entertain the young learners but to inspire them be who they are, freely.
“We enjoyed every moment and it was amazing to see kids appreciating the spectacular talent that our county has to offer,” she said with a smile.
“I am sure that the learners will be singing your choruses for the rest of the week and will cherish this day forever.”
