Two arrested following fatal beating

The 28-year-old man from Etwatwa is accused of stealing in the shop.

Etwatwa police are investigating a case of murder after a foreign spaza shop owner allegedly assaulted a resident, Siphamandla Mphuti (28), with a hammer after accusing him of stealing on August 7.

Siphamandla succumbed to his injuries at Pholosong Hospital on August 15.

According to Ekurhuleni SAPS spokesperson Captain Neldah Sekgobela, his brother, Mpho, rushed him to hospital after he found

Siphamandla at home with severe head injuries.

Mpho went to the police station, accompanied by angry community members, to open a case and demand the immediate arrest of the suspect.

“Two foreign nationals have since been arrested and charged with contravening the Immigration Act. One of the suspects linked to the incident was charged with murder. Investigations are continuing,” said Sekgobela.

Mpho expressed devastation and shock while speaking to the Benoni City Times on August 22 about the fatal incident.

He said the family wants answers about what happened and for justice to take its course.

Siphamandla was buried on August 24.
