Retirement? No thanks says local Rotarian

“Aging is natural, growing old is a decision you make.”

You know you are a Benonian if you have visited Homestead Dam, can negotiate the CBD’s one-ways with ease and have met Rhoda Toker.

This Lakefield resident has become an institution, much like Korsman Bird Sanctuary, where she can be found walking daily.

The mother of two and doting granny celebrated her 74th birthday earlier this year, but shows no interest in easing into retirement.

As an active member of the Benoni van Ryn Rotary Anns for the past 53 years and one of the founding members of the Garlands Ladies Luncheon Club in 1998, Rhoda says immersing herself in community projects keeps her mind fresh.

“I am useless at knitting and sewing, so being able to continue working is probably one of the few things I have going for me,” said the real estate agent.

“I work because I have to. But every morning I am blessed to wake up with health and vigour to face another day in an incredibly fast-paced industry.”

Having been inducted in the REMAX International as well as South African Hall of Fame and also recently becoming a Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, the self-proclaimed chocoholic is not showing any signs of slowing down.

“I have recently taken up Pilates to focus on my core strength, which in turn assists with aches and pains affecting my back and hips. Goodness knows, aging comes with a bucket load of that,” she said with a grin.

“When I need to recharge and reinvigorate, I hastily make my way to the bush. The diverse beauty of the African bush does wonders for the mind, body and soul.”

With her children settled in England and the USA, Rhoda says longing for one’s family can often become overwhelming.

“Sometimes seeing them on a screen is not enough. Fortunately, I’m still able to jet across the oceans to spend quality time with them,” she said.

“When the reminder of their hugs starts fading I find comfort in the presence of my dear friends. My friends have become my family and we share a unique bond which is worth more than gold.”

Rhoda said it is vital that one invests in three sectors throughout your life.

“Invest in making memories with your loved ones. Time spent with family is never wasted. Invest in mutual friendships built on respect and understanding. Friendship will carry you through every phase of your life.

“Invest in yourself. Find a hobby, join a club, express yourself through art; do anything that makes your heart happy.”
