Investigation finds elderly not targeted at mall

The investigation found that only one case of theft was reported in May.

An independent investigation launched by the Northmead Mall found that only one shopper has fallen victim to crime within the centre’s confines.

On June 7, the Benoni City Times reported it had received an anonymous tip-off that claimed criminals at the mall target elderly shoppers.

The source further alleged that a Benoni Police Station member informed a complainant that 58 cases of this nature have reportedly occurred at the shopping centre.

At the time, Heidi Franck, the group COO for One Property Holdings, on behalf of the landlords of the Northmead Mall, confirmed that one incident involving an 88-year-old shopper was reported to the mall’s centre management on May 11.

Franck said although the centre management is unaware of more cases of this nature, an independent investigator was appointed to investigate the matter.

On August 19, One Property Holdings released a statement detailing the investigation’s findings done by private security consultants ICS in co-operation with the Benoni SAPS.

It revealed that the May incident was an isolated case of theft, with no similar occurrences reported to the police station.

“We are committed to maintaining a safe and secure environment for our shoppers at all our malls across the country and take these reports seriously,” said Franck.

“In the interest of public safety, we felt it best to bring in an independent team to assess the basis for the rumours.”

She continued by saying the footage of the May 11 incident revealed that the suspects had entered various shops before approaching the elderly victim as she exited Clicks.

“They are seen engaging with her in conversation and then enter the Pep store together. It is here the shopper realised some of her personal belongings were missing.

“The matter was reported to the store manager and subsequently the centre management. Security measures were reinforced in response to the incident to ensure shoppers’ continued safety and well-being,” said Franck.

The statement concluded by saying the investigation’s findings reassure the centre management that the mall remains a safe place for shoppers.

“We encourage customers to continue reporting concerns to mall management and the local authorities. We remain steadfast in our commitment to transparency, safety and the well-being of our patrons,” said Franck.
