Stokvellers must be extra vigilant

The police said instead of withdrawing large amounts of cash, members should transfer the money into the members' bank accounts.

With the festive season fast approaching, Putfontein SAPS urges stokvel members to avoid travelling with large amounts of cash and to refrain from taking cash to share among members at someone’s home.

Police warn theft and robbery cases involving stokvel members increase at this time of the year as eager members collect their year-long savings.

According to the Putfontein SAPS spokesperson, Sergeant Raider Ubisi, they have already recently dealt with a case related to stokvel crime.

“Instead of withdrawing large amounts of cash and sharing this out at home or other location, it is much safer to transfer everyone’s portion into their bank account.

“Criminals are known to target members of stokvel clubs at this time of the year, building up to the festive season. The use of internet banking transfers and mobile banking can help minimise the risk of being robbed,” said Ubisi.
