Councillors confirm all pre-paid electricity meters upgraded
The electricity meters throughout Benoni were successfully upgraded at the end of last year.
The Benoni ward councillors issued a joint statement confirming the successful upgrades of all 47 753 pre-paid electricity meters throughout the city.
This statement comes after an article published in the Benoni City Times, citing information received from the CoE spokesperson Zweli Damini that clients must upgrade their meters before November 24 for it to continue working.
Ward 27 Clr Lornette Joseph confirmed that all the Benoni units’ software upgrades were completed at the end of last year.
“We have been inundated with calls from concerned residents following the article’s publication, but there is no need for panic,” she said.
“The upgrade refers to a software update. Residents were systematically issued with two additional series of numbers upon buying electricity tokens. The meters prompted the users to input these codes before new tokens could be loaded.”
She said pre-paid electricity users can confirm if the upgrades were completed by entering these codes on the units’ keypads:
• Hexing meters: enter 873.
• Sanxing meters: enter 005.
• Landis and Gyr meters: enter: 005.
The number ‘2’ will show on the updated meters’ screens. If a ‘1’ displays, users should immediately contact their ward councillor for help.
