“They had some difficulties on the river but overcame them to cross the finish line,” said Gauteng Canoe Union (GCU) PRO Jennie Dallas.

The 30km race, from Kwena Dam to Terblanche Langoed, saw 35 paddlers finish the race out of 45 entrants.

“Quite a few paddlers damaged their equipment, resulting in leaking and being unable to continue.”

Dallas thanked the local organising committee from the Lowveld Canoe Club as well volunteers and community members for a perfect race.

“The support of the Ikomati-Usutu Catchment Management Agency is hugely appreciated as they ensure a river level that is perfect for the race. We thank TRAC for their support over the years to keep the race alive. They also support a development initiative, bringing members of the Soweto Canoe and Recreation Club to the race.

“We also thank the farmers in the valley for their support and assistance in allowing us access through their properties to the river and for helping us to monitor the movements of any dangerous wildlife, particularly any hippos.”
