MomConnect transforms maternal and child health
Launched in 2014, MomConnect uses mobile technology to support the health of mothers and their children.
As MomConnect marks a decade of its impactful programme that enhances maternal and child health across SA, the Boksburg Advertiser and Benoni City Times visited local clinics to see how this initiative has enhanced maternal and child health in the region.
What is MomConnect?
Launched in 2014, MomConnect is a flagship programme designed to use mobile technology to support the health of mothers and their children. The initiative sends pregnant women free health messages via SMS or WhatsApp. Additionally, it offers access to a text-based helpdesk for queries and ratings. This innovative approach aims to keep mothers informed about their health and that of their babies, ultimately leading to better health outcomes.
Joy Clinic, Etwatwa
At the Joy Clinic in Etwatwa, Zandile Teno, the facility manager, shared the many benefits the programme has brought to their community.
“Since its launch, communication has significantly improved, making it easier for mothers to access important health information,” Teno stated.
She said the programme accommodates language preferences, allowing a mother to receive messages in the language she is most comfortable with.
“The information provided through MomConnect covers various essential topics, including dietary advice, developmental milestones for babies and reminders about hospital visits for routine check-ups.”
Teno remarked on the programme’s role in empowering mothers with knowledge about their pregnancies.
Health promoter Sindiswa Mbatha echoed Teno’s sentiments, noting the ease and speed of accessing information.
“The programme offers daily updates and important warnings about potential health risks. We have received positive feedback from the community,” Mbatha said.
However, she acknowledged that some mothers hesitate to fully engage with the programme despite its benefits.
Mbatha also stressed the importance of encouraging fathers to get involved, highlighting a noticeable increase in male participation during clinic visits.
“For men to understand this programme and support the mothers in their lives is crucial,” she emphasised.
Daveyton East Clinic
Sister Sibongile Kekana from the Daveyton East Clinic spoke highly of the programme’s proactive approach.
“It has made our work simpler and significantly improved the lives of mothers. The educational content provided by MomConnect works wonders, and I strongly encourage all mothers, especially first-time mothers, to use this invaluable resource.”
One mother, Nokownwaba Nda, shared her experience with MomConnect during her third pregnancy in 2020, especially during the challenges of the Covid-19 lockdown.
“The programme provided me with vital information and kept me engaged. I could ask questions whenever I had doubts.”
She continues to use the service for her new baby, appreciating its ongoing support, which even included a voucher worth R700 to assist with her healthcare costs.
Boksburg North Clinic
At the Boksburg North Clinic, Diosemcia Machunga acknowledged her limited experience with the programme but expressed a keen desire to start using it.
“I am pregnant with my second child and want to learn more about my unborn baby. I believe MomConnect will help me understand what to expect and simplify my experience,” she explained.
First-time mother Lindelani Mashego, who recently welcomed a now one-month-old, was unaware of the programme until her recent visit to the clinic.
“I don’t have much knowledge about motherhood, and I believe this programme will guide me through every crucial step,” she said.
She has already registered and hopes to benefit from the resources available through MomConnect.
The impact of MomConnect
The positive feedback from local clinics underscores MomConnect’s significant role in empowering mothers and improving health outcomes in SA. Over the past 10 years, the programme has facilitated effective communication between healthcare providers and mothers, fostering a supportive maternal and child health environment.
MomConnect’s use of mobile technology makes essential health information readily accessible and ensures mothers can engage actively in their healthcare journey. As the programme continues to evolve, it aims to reach even more mothers, promoting healthier pregnancies and improved outcomes for children throughout SA.
