Diabetes walk brings hope

“Care, support and balance are essential when balancing diabetes.”

Flanked by her family, Robyn Garside of Benoni laced up her running shoes to participate in the third annual Benoni Lakes Lions Club’s Strides for Diabetes Awareness held on November 24.

Robyn has become a regular face at community-driven diabetes awareness campaigns, spreading her message that this life-altering disease can affect people from all walks of life and all ages.

With the morning sun glistening over the CR Swart Dam, the energetic 25-year-old recalls how her diagnosis not only affected her lifestyle but also how she had to overcome depression associated with the disease.

“I was 11 when I was diagnosed,” she said.

Jordan Pretorius (10) with cousins Madison (10) and Kayla (6) Findley, of Benoni, take their places to participate in the third annual Benoni Lakes Lions Club’s Strides for Diabetes Awareness 5km fun walk.

“I was overcome with an insatiable thirst, nothing I consumed helped. My mom immediately took me to the doctor and I was prescribed antibiotics for a viral infection.”

Waking up the following morning, maternal instinct prompted Robyn’s mother to rush her to the hospital.

“My complexion was pale with a yellow tinge. At the hospital a glucose test confirmed that I was diabetic,” she said.

“Before the diagnosis, I was a healthy and active child with a taste for savoury treats instead of sweets. We were left dumbstruck.”

While her peers immersed themselves in tween trends, Robyn had to come to grips with regular glucose testing and administering insulin.

“It was all very overwhelming. I had to become mindful of what my body needed and when, but consistency soon prevailed.”

Celebrating her sweet 16th, Robyn recalls how this milestone celebration was overshadowed by waves of depression.

“Maintaining my physical well-being took its toll. I became envious of my friends’ easy-going lifestyles. Going out required careful planning to ensure that my insulin levels remained balanced. I could not do anything on a whim.”

Now nine years later, Robyn said that support from her family has helped her to overcome not only the physical challenges of her disease but also the effects the diagnosis had on her mental health.

“Participating in campaigns such as the Lions’ Strides walk may not make the world of difference but I do my utmost to support these campaigns,” she said as she made her way to the starting line.

“Diabetes does not discriminate nor is there a cookie-cutter template of what diabetes looks like, early detection is vital to ensure that you can live a healthy and fulfilled life.”

Club president Nick Mare and Diane Townsend welcome participants to the Strides Diabetes Awareness walk.

Welcoming participants to the 5km fun walk, Benoni Lakes Lions Club president Nick Mare was delighted at the sight of Lions from neighbouring clubs showing their support.

He encouraged young and old to make use of the on-site screening at the event, emphasising the club’s unwavering commitment to drive awareness about diabetes.

Prompted by the barks of participants’ furry pals, former club president Diane Townsend sent walkers on their way.

“We appreciate everyone’s continued support for this initiative as it aids us to help those in need,” said Mare.
