IPID arrests police officers for extortion

The case was postponed to January 30 for further investigations.

The Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court granted three officers from the Benoni Flying Squad bail of R2 000 each on December 3, following their arrest on allegations of kidnapping and extortion.

According to Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) spokesperson Phaladi Shuping, the officers allegedly approached a 38-year-old salon owner at the Norkem Park Mall on November 24 at about 18:00 and questioned her about her business documents.

“It is alleged that she informed them that her salon papers were displayed on the wall. The officers then requested her identity document, which she provided,” said Shuping.

It is reported that the officers then asked to search her house. Upon arrival, they demanded access to a safe and money, demanding R60 000.

She ultimately paid them R42 000.

Shuping said the incident was later reported to the IPID, leading to the officers’ arrests on December 2.

The court postponed the case to January 30 for further investigations.
