Carols ring out across Homestead’s waters
The team of Homestead Helpers of Benoni wish the city and its residents a safe and happy festive season.
All streets leading to Homestead Dam were abuzz with excitement as families made their way to the banks for a special outing.
Carrying picnic baskets and donations of non-perishable foods, members of the Benoni community and beyond supported Homestead Helpers for Benoni’s carols by candlelight and the Christmas market on December 8.
An estimated 6 000 people attended the day’s activities to support small businesses selling home-made Christmas goodies, as well as other local charity organisations with their festive fundraising efforts.
Strumming his guitar, local muso Jaryd Smith set the tone for a day to remember.
As the sun’s last rays illuminated the water in hues of pink and purple, silence fell over the crowd when they lit candles as part of Hospice East Rand’s annual candle celebration.
“We take this moment to remember every person who has fought and lost the battle against life-limiting illness while we celebrate those who continue to fight and those who have overcome,” said Con Roux, Hospice East Rand chairperson.
“Let these lights always be a beacon of hope and support to those needing palliative care.”
Homestead Helpers for Benoni’s committee member Jacqui Keel thanked supporters of the event, as well as those who helped during the organisation’s various clean-up projects throughout the year, for their support in the shared vision of restoring the city to its former glory, while driving community development.
“As we reflect on the year and prepare to share special moments with loved ones, remember that we are part of an exceptional city,” she said.
“Benoni is about heart and we hope to make the pulse of the city beat stronger and louder in the coming year.”
