Fear-filled festive season for city’s animals

Animals find safe refuge at TAG.

As the festive season kicked into fifth gear, many of the city’s animals scurried to safety as revellers started setting off a flurry of fireworks.

According to The Animal Guardians’ (TAG) Annie Jungmann, the sounds of loud bangs drowned out the natural night-time sounds from December 24.

“The festive season is by far our busiest time, with our entire staff and volunteer contingent working around the clock to rescue and reunite animals who have fled from the safety of their homes in an effort to evade the deafening sounds of fireworks,” said Jungmann.

“This past festive season was unfortunately no different than previous years. We took in five dogs on New Year’s Eve. Two were treated for minor injuries, while another was handed over to the Benoni SPCA due to our kennels reaching maximum capacity.”

She confirmed that one of its intakes has successfully been reunited with his family.

While many celebrated the arrival of 2025, the team at TAG were astonished when a male husky-cross, safely found its way to its premises.

“He was bewildered but somehow managed to navigate his way our premises where he was assessed and found to be uninjured,” said the founder of the animal welfare organisation.

“He will be kept at our kennels, where he will be taken care of until he is claimed by his owner.”
