The Benoni Northerns Football Club (BNFC) is in search of additional players for its super league and reserves teams to strengthen the roster with a plan to build a team that can steer them to success in the upcoming Eastern Super League season.

The club will host trials tomorrow (January 14) from 18:30 to 20:30 and again on January 16 at the same time, at Benoni Northerns Sports Club, 1 Brodigan Street, Northmead.

While the reserves team had a fantastic season, finishing the reserves league in second place, the call for fresh talent follows a disappointing 2024 season for the first team.

Northerns’ reserve team players show their respect to their supporters after beating Old Bens in the Benoni derby.

They finished mid-table after a string of inconsistent results and the club seeks to improve their fortunes under the guidance of coach Alessandro Carli, who led the reserves team charge for the league title before being promoted to the first team after the firing of Andrew Kelly.

Carli said the new players will help boost their charge for silverware in the reserve league after their near miss last season and secure a top three place for the first team in the super league.

“The plan for this year is to achieve silverware in the reserve league while also trying to push our young players into the squad to grow them for the first team and SAFA Ekurhuleni Hollywoodbets Regional League,” he said.

“We would all want a top three spot for the first team. However, it’s going to be incredibly difficult but the squad should have the capabilities to be competitive this season.”

In his autopsy of the previous season, Carli explained the lessons will be valuable in their build-up for the upcoming campaign, especially because their charge has been boosted by playing in the Hollywoodbets Regional League.

“I felt the club had a mixture of success and some disappointment. Our reserve squad had a really good season. Despite the change of coach, they managed to still finish in the top two. The first team didn’t have a good season and a lot of changes and situations that occurred didn’t help the squad really settle,” Carli said.

“The Hollywoodbets league, which started last September, has helped build a good squad energy. I feel the players who will be in the first team this year will definitely have the goal of rectifying last year’s inconsistent run.”
