Dubbed the Covid-babies, the Class of 2024 started their high school career under a cloud of uncertainty, with many relying on remote studies and tutoring.
Isolated, many battled through the emotions, feeling that their formative teenage years were stunted.
These setbacks did, however, not cast a shadow over their grit and determination.
Dr Eugene Rooyakkers, Benoni High School’s headmaster congratulated the class of 2024, on their 99.2% pass rate.
“These learners started their high school careers in isolation and quickly had to adapt to remote learning, which demanded self-discipline,” he said.
“Despite this, they remained resolute. The 2020 lockdown restrictions created unthinkable obstacles for learners, however, they persevered allowing the hurdles to shape them into hard-working and dedicated individuals.
Zakiyya Laher held the school’s name high, attaining nine distinctions.
“My faith in Allah, has been my anchor and constant source of support,” said the proud matriculant.
“High school came with unique challenges but the BHS teachers went above and beyond to assist us on this journey.”
Of her future plan Laher said, she will be pursuing a career in medicine,
“Growing up, I watched my mom, a medical practitioner, touch the lives of many with her gentle compassion and dedication. I hope to one day make a valuable impact, in the way she has,” she said.
To the class of 2025, Laher said, matrics must be consistent throughout the year.
“Small, steady steps lead to great things. Stay disciplined and trust the process,” she concluded.
