WATCH: Bone defends Dis-Chem Ride for Sight title

After her win in her second year as a professional rider, she won in a dominant 03:08:36.

Lisa Bone was in incredible form to successfully defend the women’s 116km classic at the 36th Dis-Chem Ride for Sight at Boksburg Stadium on February 16.

After winning last year’s race with a sprint finish, beating multiple national champions and Olympians Carla Oberholzer and Jo van de Winkel in her second year of cycling, she dismantled the 12-strong elite women’s field for a back-to-back victory.

The Cycle Nation Enza rider sailed through the finish line with no competitor in sight to take the first wheel in a dominant 03:08:36.

She was followed in second place by Lucy Young, winner of the SA individual time trial women’s title at the nationals in Midvaal on February 6. She crossed the line in 03:11:25 while Bone’s teammate, Taneal Otto, fifth in the women’s road race at the nationals, clocked 03:11:24 for third place.

Bone thanked her teammates for their hard grind on the 116km course to keep their competition at bay.

“My team worked really hard. Everyone in the bunch worked hard, we couldn’t get rid of them until about 25km to go. My team attacked until they were fatigued and then I was able to get away,” she said.

Despite losing against the experienced Oberholzer and Van de Winkel, Bone hailed her young teammates for keeping it together and ensuring the Sandton club dominated the podium for the second successive year.

“We have a very different team. We used to have experienced riders who competed at the Olympians. Now, we have a couple of younger riders. We are all still learning. We listened to the car a lot and tried to use our own instincts. Sometimes we get it wrong but today we got it right.”
