WATCH: BHS in high spirits after successful derby day

The derby featured rugby, hockey and netball matches.

The Benoni High School (BHS) Panthers First XV captain Lwandle Nonyane showed his soft side when he was consoled by his teammates on the side of the field following their 25-10 loss to Hoërskool Erasmus on March 1.

After the final whistle, Nonyane and his teammates went over to the stands to thank the cubs for their support throughout the game despite being on the back foot. The Grade Eight learners responded with even loud cheers and Nonyane’s emotions got the best of him.

The hooker knelt as tears streamed down his face while his teammates surrounded him in a show of solidarity after suffering their first loss in their opening fixture of the season during their three-in-one derby day against the Bronkhorstspruit school.

Rassies ran in three tries, two penalties and two conversions compared to their hosts’ two five-pointers in a dominant performance.

Teboho Mokoena, Marko Fourie and Kevin Maartens touched down for Rassies while centre Henco Cornelissen scored the rest of the points through his boot.

Nonyane and Kamo Tsitse scored the Panthers’ only tries in a match where a lack of fitness and perhaps, match temperament, showed the amount of work coach Colin Lloyd still has to do to get his team kicking.

The BHS first team won their match 21-9.

Earlier, the Panthers’ U14s, U15s and second teams lost their matches, with the U16A and B, as well as the third team, notching up wins.

Hockey

Jason Russell led the first team to a 6-0 win while the second team won 2-0. The girls’ first team, led by Kyra Clarke, won their fixture 2-1 and the second team registered a 2-0 victory.

The U14A and U16A teams were humbled while the U15A won 3-2.

Netball

Motivated by the unveiling of a new main court and the fact that they will be recorded as the first team to play on the court, Hlengiwe Madonsela led the first team to a 21-9 victory.

Benoni won the U14A and B fixtures, as well as the U15A and B matches. Erasmus clinched the U16A and B matches while Benoni’s U17s ran out 11-8 victors.

The Rassies second team won their match 13-4.

Although their preparation started a week earlier after the conclusion of the athletics season, the Benoni High head of sport, Edoardo Conradie, was happy with their overall performance on the day.

The BHS Cubs were in full song during the first teams rugby match.

“We’ve only been training for a week. Today we laid a great foundation. We are looking forward to the rest of the season. There were a few hiccups. Overall, it was successful for us. Our learners were disciplined and assisted greatly on the side of the field. That was the biggest compliment,” he said.
