Highway patrol interrupts attempted armed robbery
No one was injured during the incident.
Swift response by patrolling Highway Patrol members led to the arrest of three suspects attempting to execute an armed robbery, in Atteridgeville.
Conducting routine operations in WF Nkomo Street, on March 5, officers travelling in an unmarked SAPS vehicle came across the unfolding scene.
“The officers noticed a white Nissan NP300 standing off the side of the road, with a silver Suzuki Swift idling in the middle of the road,” said Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) and Rapid Response Services (RRS) spokesperson, Warrant Officer Grant Giblin.
“Suspecting that they might be witnessing a crime in progress, the officers proceeded to tactically approach the scene.”
Giblin explains that one of the passengers of the Swift jumped from the rear of the vehicle, firing at the bakkie.
“Officers sprang into action resulting in the suspect turning his attention to the officers, firing multiple shots in their direction,” he said.
“Following a brief exchange of fire, the suspect fled into the nearby informal settlement, leaving his accomplices behind. The suspects were arrested and their vehicle impounded.”
