The Benoni Northerns Bridge Club (BNBC) invites anyone interested in the game to join them every Thursday afternoon at Benoni Northerns Sports Club.

“We spend our Thursday afternoons playing the challenging and enjoyable game of bridge.

“We speak in ‘codes’ trying to explain the cards in our hands to our partners. We decide how many tricks we want to play and then try to make them,” said the club’s Pat Neumann.

The World Bridge Federation (WBF) explains bridge as a “trust game, where deception plays little to no role”.

According to the WBF, it’s a game of cards played by four players divided into two teams, with north playing south while east plays west.

Each player receives thirteen cards (your hand) which should be sorted into suits (spades, hearts, diamonds and clubs).

Members of the Benoni Northerns Bridge Club enjoy a round.

The game is divided into two phases, bidding and play.

In the first phase, the partnerships use the bidding to determine which player will be the declarer and how many tricks he or she must win with the chosen trump suit (or without trumps if desired).

The second phase sees both sides attempting to win as many tricks as possible.

Neumann said the game is fun and easy to learn, adding that once you grasp the basics, you would not want to stop playing.

“We change tables, playing against many couples and enjoy socialising with our bridge friends at tea-time and during the game,” she said.
