Pietroiusti to focus on positives after nationals performance

He missed the top by 0.16 seconds in the U13 boys' 1 500m race.

Middle distance prospect Matthew Pietroiusti was chuffed with his performance at the South African Schools Athletics (SASA) primary schools track and field championships at Germiston Stadium on March 22.

Although not a result he had set out for, Pietroiusti flaunted his immense talent despite finishing the U13 boys’ 1 500m race 11th in 04:44.46, falling 0.16 seconds outside the top 10.

“I have worked hard this season with my coach. I’m very happy with what I have achieved,” Pietroiusti said.

The race was won by Kananelo Makole from the Free State, with Gauteng’s Anton Bazkho claiming the silver. Theto Kekana from Limpopo completed the top three.

After his PB of 04:38.00 for fourth place at the Gauteng champs a week earlier, the 12-year old went into the nationals expecting a better performance but instead of crying over spilt milk, he will take the lessons and keep on improving.

Sharing insight into his performance, Pietroiusti said, “The competition is always tough at the champs. I love competing there. I ran a PB at the Gauteng champs but I know I can do even better and I aim to keep improving as I go”.

To underline his commitment and dedication to running, Pietroiusti clocked 29:55 for second in the junior men’s race at the Beyers Greenstone Run on March 23, a day after his exploits at Germiston Stadium.

Rise

The Farrarmere Primary Grade Seven learner’s rise started in 2023 when he clinched a silver at the SASA primary schools nationals in Pietermaritzburg.

That performance at the Msunduzi Stadium, when he finished second in 03:45.11 in the U11 boys’ 1200 race, was the start of great things for the 12-year old.

Benonian Matthew Pietrouisti took part in the 5km fun run.

Pietroiusti’s progress in the intervening period has been remarkable and his rise from an unknown runner to one of the most talked about young athletes in the province is complete.

Coached by Jared de Waal at Irun Athletic Club in Brakpan, the youngster continued to shine during last year’s provincial cross-country league meetings, where he clocked a podium in his first-ever cross-country race.

He went on to earn his provincial colours and represented CGA at the ASA cross-country championships in the Vaal last September, finishing the U12 boys’ 3km race sixth. From there, the Farrarmere Primary School learner never looked back.

Pietroiusti will participate in the cross-country season for both schools and clubs this year. He is keen to improve on his 12th place at the SASA and sixth at the ASA cross-country champs.
