Correctional Services officials from six centres across Gauteng gathered at the Modderbee Correctional Centre recently for a choral choir concert.
Each dressed in unique attire, choristers from Boksburg, Modderbee, Kgosi Mampuru II, Zonderwater, Johannesburg and Krugersdorp correctional facilities delivered choral performances while showcasing their vocal talents.
According to the regional head of corporate services, Thandi Hlatswayo, the concert was a platform for correctional officers to engage in an artistic and cultural exchange while taking time out from their duties to express themselves through song.
“Music is therapy; it heals us emotionally, psychologically, physically and socially. We experience anxiety, stress, and depression due to the environment we work in. That is why we are here today, to de-stress. As Africans, whether we mourn, grieve or celebrate, we sing,” said Hlatswayo.
